Ladies, Wine & Design at the Design Chapel

Summary

A lesson in how to meet people as an adult

If quality time is your love language, there’s no better to meet and connect with new people than conversation. Whether you’re in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s or older, Chapel Chats is a unique event that really brought my insecurities and vulnerability to the surface (with strangers) in a way thats hard to replicate online. Admittedly, the wine definitely helped me loosen up!

In the Summer of 2022 I attended the first ever “chapter” of Chapel Chats. Held at the Design Chapel in the heart of Southampton Common and hosted by Ladies, Wine & Design, this intimate evening event was perfectly suited to this uniquely creative and somehow cosy setting.

With a mission to empower and lift those identifying as female or the pronouns “she/her/hers” and “they/them/their”, this local branch of the global non-profit do what they say on the tin. Greeted with a cute name sticker and a choice of alcohol or soft drinks, the small space made networking considerably less daunting especially if you go it alone like I did. The time (7-9pm) was also ideal for anyone that was a parent, or came from other cities, which they had.

Armed with cue cards, pens and wine, after a brief intro LWD host extraordinaires Jazzy Olive and Hattie Hopkins guided us all through a lovely drawing activity. There’s nothing quite like really observing a new face as your brain scrawl documents what you may or may not have actually seen!

Before it sounds terrifying, this was definitely not a challenge on who could draw best, but more a creative way to break down barriers and connect.

What I really loved about Chapel Chats was how varied the people came were, there was definitely no need to be anxious about being the “right” type of creative here. I went away feeling like I really achieved something despite being very slightly warm-headed.
